Nature Bound is an outdoor recreation program at Kennesaw State University that provides outdoor pursuits for the KSU community. Nature Bound offers both recreational and educational opportunities for everyone – novice to expert. Nature Bound is founded on the principles of experiential learning to develop knowledge, leadership, and community.

Fall 2021

Freshmen Canoe and Camp Trip on the Toccoa River

August 6-8, 2021

This trip is specifically for incoming freshmen to KSU! Meet new friends as you learn how to canoe, camp in the backcountry, and work on your communication and leadership skills.

A weekend filled with river canoeing fun, exploration, and adventure at the beautiful Toccoa river. This is a great trip for any and all who are beginners or intermediate paddlers looking for an exciting but relaxing weekend on the water. We will pack all camping gear in our canoes and take it with us down the river. We’ll camp Friday night, get on the river Saturday and float to a campsite where we will stay for the night, and wake up to keep paddling Sunday.

Biking

Roll to new destinations with KSU Nature Bound biking trips! We offer both road bike and mountain bike trips. In a typical beginner road biking trip, we will cover no more than 15 paved miles. On a beginner mountain biking trip, we will cover no more than 5 trail miles. 

  • Join Outdoor Adventures for a fun bike ride from the Kennesaw Campus on the paved Noonday Creek Trail! We will visit a nearby coffee shop on each ride. Options for a 1 hour, 6-8 mile ride and 3 hour 18-22 mile ride.

    No bike? No problem! We will meet at Outdoor Adventures where bikes and helmets will be provided for those who reserve one upon registration. Outdoor Adventures is located inside the Student Recreation and Activities Center on the Kennesaw Campus.

  • Are you up for a challenge? Join Outdoor Adventures for a fun bike ride from the Kennesaw Campus on the Noonday Creek Trail! We will ride up the monster climb to the top of Kennesaw Mountain! For an extra challenge, repeat the climb! We plan to ride up to 20 miles during the ride.

    No bike? No problem! We will meet at Outdoor Adventures where bikes and helmets will be provided for those who reserve one in advance. Outdoor Adventures is located inside the Student Recreation and Activities Center on the Kennesaw Campus

  • Outdoor Adventures is hosting weekly group rides at Allatoona Creek Park. We will accommodate any pace to allow newer riders to get to know the trails at Allatoona Creek Park. Please pre-register so that we know to expect you. You may also reserve a mountain bike through the registration.

    Using a KSU Bike? Pick up your bike from the KSU Bike Shop at any point before the ride on Tuesday. Members may check out a bike, helmet, lock and bike rack at no additional cost. We can provide trunk-mounted racks and 2" receiver hitch mounted bike racks. Call ahead to pull your vehicle around to the Bike Shop for help installing the rack.

Paddling

KSU Nature Bound Trips

KSU Nature Bound gives participants the chance to paddle through the waters of adventure! We offer a variety of water sports such as kayaking, canoeing, rafting, and stand up paddle boarding. A typical beginner paddling trip includes no more than 3 miles of paddling on flat water in either a canoe or kayak. Transportation, boats, paddles, and other necessary equipment are always provided at no additional cost.

  • Join Outdoor Adventures for an intro to Stand Up Paddleboarding! We will provide paddleboards and instruction. Meet us at the Student Recreation and Activities Center pool on the Kennesaw Campus.

  • Raft the middle section of the Ocoee with us. We’ll experience class III and class IV rapids on this three hour tour of the river. Included in registration are transportation from KSU, instruction, and gear needed on the river.

  • Join us on a beautiful stretch of the Cartecay river. This section is great for an intro to whitewater kayaking. By the end of this 3-day course, participants will have the opportunity to become familiar and comfortable with:  
    -whitewater kayaking equipment 
    -maneuvers including ferries, eddy turns, and peel-outs  
    -river hydrology 
    -basic river safety and rescue skills 
    -kayak rolling

    Difficulty Rating/Experience Needed: Intermediate, previous paddling experience is helpful, but not required

Hiking & Backpacking

Hiking and Backpacking

A typical beginner hiking trip includes a hike in and out of the woods lasting between 5 - 8 miles. A typical backpacking trip involves hiking about 5 - 10 miles into the woods while carrying all camping gear in backpacks, spending the night camping, and hiking 5 - 10 miles out of the woods the next day. Both types of trips offer scenic views and great company!

Climbing

Rock Climbing

We offer two types of climbing - bouldering and top roping. Bouldering consists of free climbing shorter heights or boulders without the use of a rope or harness.
Top Rope Climbing involves climbing taller rock structures while connected to a rope and harness that is fed through an anchor and attached to a belayer on the ground.

  •  Join us for a day trip to Sandrock in Alabama where we will be doing some fun top rope climbing!  We will enjoy time at the crag, learning some skills of outdoor rock climbing, and depending on how the group feels will get on 3-5 unique climbs. This is a great trip for beginners and those interested in rock climbing.  You must be top rope belay qualified in the KSU Climbing Gym, we provide regular belay courses at no extra cost to student members.

  • For the experienced climber, on this trip you will be able to take what you’ve learned in the gym - outside for some of the greatest sport climbing in the South!  We will be heading to Sandrock, AL for the day and you will have to chance to experience lead climbing outdoors.  You must be lead belay and climb qualified in the KSU Climbing Gym.  Registration link for lead courses

  • Over Thanksgiving Break, Nature Bound will be heading to the Red River Gorge in Kentucky for some of the greatest sport climbing in the South! We will camp four nights and spend the days at the crag climbing incredible routes. Over the course of the trip, climbers will have the opportunity to become proficient with lead climbing, cleaning, and rappelling. This is a climbing trip you will not want to miss! 

    Difficulty Rating/Experience needed: 7/Climbing experience required, must be lead climb and belay qualified in the KSU Climbing Gym

Ziplining

A ziplining trip includes 3 hours that covers suspended rope bridges as well as ziplines. Transportation and all necessary gear are provided. 

  • Looking for some thrill this fall semester?  Nature Bound is going on an epic zip lining tour in Historic Banning Mills!  We will get to ride multiple lines and get some awesome speed with amazing views.  This is a trip you won’t want to miss!

Caving

A caving trip involves a few hours of guided crawls through caves while learning about rock formations and the history of the cave. Transportation and all necessary gear are provided. 

  • Join Nature Bound in exploring Howard’s Waterfall cave in Trenton, Georgia. During our time in the cave, we will be crawling between a mixture of large and tight spaces while getting muddy in the process. We will also stop at checkpoints and admire the spectacular cave formations that nature has to offer!  

    Difficulty Rating/Experience needed: 4 / No experience needed, will be traveling through tight spaces

Past Nature Bound Trips | Spring 2017

 

  • Make your purchase at the Student Recreation and Activities Center in the Outdoor Adventures Suite, #1050 with K-Cash. The program cost is $25 per semester and gives you an opportunity to pursue more #ksuadventures annually. In a semesters time, this membership pays for itself as you attend more and more trips. Being part of the Nature Bound Priority Program is not required to attend trips.


    Nature Bound Membership includes:

 Frequently Asked Questions

  • Current KSU students, faculty, staff and active alumni are eligible to register and go on Nature Bound trips. We are unable to allow those who are not affiliated Kennesaw State University to attend our trips.

  • Registration for trips is located in the Outdoor Adventures Suite located in room 1050 of the Student Recreation and Activities Center. For online registration, visit our Sports and Recreation Member Portal.

  • Nature Bound members receive great benefits including: priority registration, discounts on outdoor gear rental, discounts on Nature Bound trips, and a t-shirt. The cost is $25 per semester and are great for those planning several trips or a more expensive trip.

  • Becoming a Nature Bound can happen at any time! You can also purchase the program at the time of registration. Just ask the attendant at the Outdoor Adventures Desk.

  • Payments are due at the time of registration in full, with the exception of trips with a deposit. Currently, we are only able to accept payments in the form of cash, check or K-Cash for in-person registrations so please come prepared! Credit cards are accepted only if the registration is processed online.
  • There are no regular meetings for Nature Bound Members. However, if you register for an overnight trip there will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting which typically occurs on Wednesday nights the week of the trip.
  • Only on rare occasions will refunds be given. In the case of a trip being canceled, every participant will receive a refund. Participants may also get a refund if they find an eligible replacement to take their place on a trip. (i.e. someone on the waiting list). A refund packet must be completed by the participant and turned into the Outdoor Pursuits Coordinator within 2 weeks of the canceled trip. Once the Outdoor Pursuits Coordinator receives all forms, a check will be mailed to the participant’s home within two weeks.
  • Each trip is different, but usually included in the trip price is transportation, activity specific gear, vendor/guide for the activity, trip leader service and some food. For more details about a specific trip feel free to contact us!
  • Pre-trip meetings are the Trip Leader’s opportunity to provide relevant information concerning the trip to all participants. Trip Leaders should use this opportunity to have participants’ complete paperwork, give trip specific information, review safety protocols, check gear, and establish time deadlines. Trip Leaders should be confident that participants know and understand the dangers/risks associated with a specific trip at the end of this meeting. Pre-trip meetings are mandatory for all participants. If a participant doesn’t attend a pre-trip meeting and does not contact and meet with the Trip Leader prior to the pre-trip meeting s/he will not be allowed to attend the trip and will not receive a refund.
  • No way! All of our trips are geared toward beginners, but they are also great for those already involved in the activity as well. Trips that are for those more experienced will be noted that way.

  • Trip leaders are current KSU students with a passion for the outdoors. Trip Leaders plan all aspects of the trip and are here to answer your questions. Contact information for your trip leaders is given on each information sheet once you register for the trip.
  • No, all current students, faculty, staff, and active alumni are able to attend the trips. However, those who are Nature Bound members receive extra benefits.
  • There are a limited amount of spots on each trip. They are filled on a first come, first served basis. Trips that are not completely full will end the Wednesday before the trip.
